The mandate
CBSE: a career counsellor in every school from 2026
- Two separate roles. The CBSE Governing Body decision of November 2025 asks schools to appoint a Counselling and Wellness Teacher and a dedicated Career Counsellor, at one counsellor per 500 students.
- Trained people only. Both roles call for at least 50 hours of training. Untrained volunteers no longer qualify, and the posts outnumber the people who can fill them.
- NEP 2020 set the direction. The National Education Policy names guidance and counselling as essential at secondary level, and state boards are following CBSE.
- What it means for you. Career guidance is becoming a specialised role in Indian schools, opening doors for trained professionals. Trained teachers lead the way.

How long is the course?+
50 hrs self-paced. The recorded modules, quizzes and reading sit in the course portal, so you set the speed and fit it around your job, with live sessions and handholding alongside.
I am a teacher with no counselling background. Can I join?+
Yes. The course assumes no prior counselling experience. Most participants are teachers, lecturers, HR professionals, graduates and homemakers. You already have the hardest part: you know how to talk to young people.
